SA's political parties square up

Thirty-five political parties have registered to contest South Africa's April 14 election, with 11 squaring up at both national level and in all nine provinces.
The 11 parties comprise the country's major political heavyweights: the Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Independent Democrats (ID), Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), United Democratic Movement (UDM), African National Congress (ANC), Azanian Peoples Organisation (Azapo), and New National Party (NNP).
Three parties, the Keep It Straight and Simple (Kiss) party, The Organisation Party (Top) and the United Front (UF) have registered to contest the elections nationally only.
About 14 parties registered for selected provincial elections only, while seven registered for both selected provinces and for the national election.
Parties paid R150 000 to participate in national elections and R30 000 for each province.
The
Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will scrutinise the candidate lists of all 35 parties to confirm that they comply with the requirements of the Electoral Act and the electoral code of conduct.
