R18m E Rand sanitation project

Gauteng Development Planning and Local Government MEC Trevor Fowler has launched the R18-million Alra Park water and sanitation project near Nigel in the Lesedi local municipality to provide clean water and proper sanitation to communities on the East Rand.
The project will cover both the Lesedi local municipality and the Ekurhuleni metropolitan council as part of the province's programme to phase out the bucket sewage system.
The department said the process of eradicating the unhealthy sanitation system began in March, and it was expected that the bucket system in the area would be eliminated by June.
The provincial government launched a four-year programme in March 2002 to provide clean water and proper sanitation to all Gauteng citizens by 2006.
The government has also allocated the contract to instal new toilets to a local contractor, Eunice Construction, owned by a black local woman. The contractor, which employs 27 people, has
also ensured the employment of local people, especially women.
"We should be particularly proud that the removal of the bucket system from this area by June will mean that 80 percent of all identified buckets in the province would have been removed", Fowler said.
The bucket system has already been phased out in Wagplek, Dukathole, Duduza and Masechaba View on the East Rand.
