Nokia's Great SA roadshow

1 October 2003

From 1 October to 16 December, five 10-ton, 22-metre long, 4-metre high trucks will be visiting 260 towns, cities and suburbs across South Africa with a crew of artists, technicians and performers as part of the Nokia Great South African Journey.

"Nokia is about connecting people", says Nokia media director Michelle Stephen, "and is taking 10 weeks to focus on the positive of South Africa, by exploring 260 of South Africa's towns, cities, settlements and suburbs to reveal hidden talents – anything from artistry to stories of great hospitality, the wisdoms of your oldest citizens, the budding entrepreneur who has created a uniquely South African craft, the homebody with the greatest traditional recipe.

"All these things define our country and play a part in making it great", says Stephen.

The five rigs will split up, each going its own way, to rejoin in Cape Town on 16 December for a massive party at Bloubergstrand where Nokia's findings from the 10-week long journey will be showcased.

All material gathered on the trip will be recorded and published in documentaries, books and exhibitions.

"You and your town will be in the spotlight for one special day as the media capture what's great at your event", says Stephen. "A vital part of the success of this event will be the participation of the people in your town, and Nokia invites everyone to showcase their South African story on stage with their teams.

Entertainment and activities will be laid on, and local traders with their food and craft stalls are invited to join in and interact with the crews.

Win a bursary to study at CIDA
Nokia is also inviting schools to take part in the journey, and a student from each province will be selected, through a competition, for a full bursary to study for a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree at CIDA University in Johannesburg, commencing in 2005.

CIDA is a world-class, technology-enriched, university-level institute of higher education that aims to develop students into the leaders of tomorrow, both securing them a bright future and encouraging them to spread their knowledge to their home communities and the country at large.

The competition is open to all South Africans of tertiary education age who have a Matric pass with at least a C for English second language or D for English first language; who passed Maths on higher grade with an E or standard grade with a D; and who have done commercial subjects, including accounting, business economics or science.

Entrants have to write an essay of between 3 000 and 5 000 words entitled: "South Africa – The Greatest Country in the World". A judging panel, led by the CEO of CIDA University, will judge the essays on elements such as originality, creative writing ability, research and the measure of passion in the submissions.

The closing date for submissions is 31 December 2003, and the results will be available on 29 February 2004.

Entries can be posted to The Nokia Great South African Journey, PO Box 98364, Sloane Park, 2152, or faxed to (011) 463-3890, or e-mailed to nokiajourney@cybertrade.co.za.

Accompanying each entry must be a short description of the entrant and his or her personal circumstances and contact details. Entries must be legible, but may be hand-written, typed, or written using a standard office word-processing package if e-mailed.
