South Africans get on the Fun Bus
Jabulani Tshindane

29 July 2004

The Fun Bus - part of SA Tourism's Sho't Left campaign, which aims to promote a culture of local holiday travel among South Africans - gets its maiden run this weekend, with four luxury coaches taking 160 people on a low-cost, high-value Durban getaway.

The four coaches will get a rousing send-off from South African Tourism chief executive Cheryl Carolus in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon.

The Sho't Left campaign targets ordinary South Africans and their families who have a desire to travel but do not know where to go - or believe they can't afford to get there.

The luxury 40-seater buses are specially branded coaches that offer affordable, value-for-money trips to different destinations around the country.

SA Tourism initially planned for one bus, but due to huge demand a fleet of four buses will cruise down to the coast for only R825 return per person sharing, with children aged 2-18 paying only R412 (children under 2 travel for free; maximum two children sharing).

The price includes two nights' accommodation at the three-star South Beach Holiday Inn Garden Court, meal vouchers, and free vouchers to some of Durban's leading entertainment attractions, such as the Marine Ushaka Waterworld.

"The positive response from those who previously had no history of taking holidays has been staggering", says Carolus. "The Fun Bus is the first in a series of exciting and affordable local product offerings, and it is encouraging that it has been welcomed with open arms."
