SA hosts INSITE festival
Mahlatsi Mgidi

27 October 2004

The South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research will display numerous sustainable development projects at the International Science, Innovation and Technology Exhibition.

The exhibition is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and will be held from 1-3 November at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg.

CSIR, the largest research, development and innovation institution in Africa, will host a generic exhibition as well as individual projects that it is currently busy with.

The exhibition will include a candle-like mosquito repellent derived from an indigenous plant, and the repellent drives mosquitoes away through its volatile components.

Also on display will be the Digital Doorway, a computer kiosk aimed at introducing computer literacy to all South Africans as well as the National Accessibility Portal, an Internet facility that will provide information on life skills and activities for people with disabilities and their families.

Thirteen other countries will showcase their latest innovations in science and technology.

The countries that will participate in the exhibition are: Botswana, Brazil, China, Finland, France, Germany, Iran, Japan, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Over fifty local companies are expected to showcase their products, projects, services and solutions.

The aim of the exhibition is to facilitate the growth of science and technology in a way that makes a positive and noticeable impact on the sustainable development of the country.

It will also create an international market place for innovation, focus on international science and technology solutions for developing countries and promote global sustainable development partnerships.

A conference to discuss the commercial potential and benefits of biotechnology as well as a CSIR workshop on laser technologies will also be held during the exhibition.
