SA web readership rockets

Readership of South African internet sites has increased by 25% since August 2004, according to the Online Publishers Association (OPA). The South African web attracted a combined local and overseas audience of 4.38-million readers or unique browsers in April 2005, generating 111.6-million page impressions.

Independently audited by Nielsen/Netratings, the OPA's April statistics show an increase of 900 000 online readers over August 2004.

South Africa's top online publisher is Media24, which includes News24 and Finance24, with a unique readership of over 1.7-million and almost 27-million page impressions in April.

Independent Online is in second place, with a unique readership of 1.3-million and 13-million page impressions.

Third is M-Web, followed by SuperSport Zone, Ananzi, Iafrica, Mail & Guardian Online, Johnnic Communications, CareerJunction and Moneyweb.

The survey reveals that South African online publishers attract a highly educated and wealthy audience. Some 24.7% - the largest group - of internet users have postgraduate degrees and 19.4% bachelor's degrees.

About 20% of users have a total combined annual household income of R400 000 or more, putting them in the top earnings bracket.

Most of the local online readership is in Johannesburg, followed by Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban.

The largest age category of web users is 18 to 34, while 57.3% are male and 42.6% female.

Of 8 677 users surveyed by Nielsen/Netratings, 55% access the internet from work and 33% from home.

The OPA represents South Africa's major online publishing businesses, including 365 Digital Publishing, 5fm, Ananzi, BDFM Publishers, Business in Africa, CareerJunction, CreamerMedia, Iafrica, Independent Online, ITWeb Limited, JHBLive, Johnnic Communications, Mail & Guardian Online, Moneymax, M-Web, Media24, Moneyweb Holdings, Ramsay, Son & Parker, SABCnews, Supersport Zone, Private Property and Biz-community.
