The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the deaths of another two South Africans in Iraq on Tuesday.
This brings to 11 the official number of South Africans killed in Iraq since the start of the war there.
"Our information indicates that the convoy in which the two were travelling came under fire in the South of Baghdad, leaving the two South Africans dead", Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said.
The remains of the two have now been transferred to Kuwait, Mamoepa said, adding the department was in contact with the deceased's employer to assist in securing export permits from Kuwait to South Africa.
"In addition, the Department of Foreign Affairs is in a process of making contact with the bereaved families to render consular assistance."
The government has extended condolences to members of the bereaved families.
"Nonetheless, government reiterates its call on South Africans not to visit Iraq in the
light of the ongoing conflict in that country", Mamoepa said.
