Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula unveiled ten mobile units at a fully packed stadium in King William's town last weekend saying it was an attempt to bring services closer to the people, especially those living in rural areas.
The units are fully equipped to issue various certificates and documents on the spot, including birth, marriage and death registrations, IDs and passport applications.
"The services on wheels are fully equipped to provide services to clients in remote areas, and to areas insufficiently covered by the existing home affairs offices," she said.
The units are fully computerised and equipped with satellite connectivity to provide real time processing of applications.
It is hoped the move would alleviate long queues at home affairs offices in the country, and shorten long distances people travel for this reason.
These were the first of almost seventy units that will be ready by the end of
June.
Mapisa-Nqakula said the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo would receive additional units because of their size and rural nature.
She applauded co-operation from various departments including, social development, health, correctional services and the South African Police Service
