President Thabo Mbeki says the leaders of the group of eight industrialised nations (G8) had responded positively to matters raised by the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad) in Gleneagles, Scotland last week.
Mbeki was speaking to the media at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Tuesday as he welcomed Jordan's King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, who is in the country on a private visit.
Mbeki said the G8 Summit last week went "very well", with Africa receiving support on peace and security, debt, aid, trade and infrastructure investment.
The G8 leaders agreed to double aid for Africa by 2010, increasing aid for all developing countries by around US$50-billion per year by 2010, of which at least $25-billion extra per year will go to Africa.
The G8 also endorsed the recent write-off of the debt of heavily indebted nations by the Paris Club and the G8 Finance ministers was endorsed. This write-off amounts to
$17-billion.
"What remains to be done is for us [Nepad] to elaborate specific programmes as to where that money should be spent and how," Mbeki said.
