R4.2bn for police pay increase
15 December 2004
Members of the South African Police Service can look forward to performance-based salary increases in 2005 in a move aimed at raising police productivity and morale.
Making the announcement in Pretoria on Monday, National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi said an amount of R4.2-billion over three years had been made available for the increase - R950-million for 2005, R1.2-billion for 2006 and R1.9-billion for 2007.
The increase, which becomes effective from 1 April 2005, applies to police officers on grades 1 to 12, which covers members from the lowest rank to that of senior superintendent.
Selebi added that the performance-based increases would be effected at the same time as annual increases. Police officers received a 6.2% increase in 2004 - ranging from R366 a month for a constable to R1 628 for a senior superintendent -along with all other public servants
The performance-based increases mean that constables stand to receive
a raise of between R300 and R400, sergeants R528, and inspectors R654. Captains stand to receive increases of R785, superintendents between R900 and R1 000, and senior between R1 352 and R1 628.
"Police are encouraged to reduce priority crime by between 7% and 10%", Selebi said. "These performance-based salary increases will do a lot to improve professionalism among our members."
He added that the service hopes the increases will attract new recruits to the SAPS, which aims to have a staff complement of 156 760 by 2007. South Africa's police force currently numbers about 90 000.
