The South African Revenue Service (Sars) says it received about 2.4-million tax returns during the tax filing season that ended last week.
Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay said the figure had increased from last year's 2.1-million. He described the response as "good and commendable".
"We have already started processing all received tax returns," Lackay said. "Incomplete tax returns will be sent back to be properly completed."
Sars conducted a campaign throughout May to encourage taxpayers to submit their tax returns before the 8 July deadline.
Offices countrywide were open on Saturday to allow people more time to submit their forms.
People who failed to submit their tax returns should brace themselves for hefty penalties.
According to Sars, penalties would range from R300 to R1 000 and more, depending on whether a person had outstanding tax returns.
However, Lackay said the department would be lenient towards people
who came forward voluntarily.
