The State Information Technology Agency and the Rustenburg municipality have signed an agreement to set up an information technology centre to offer basic training for employees of the municipality.
SITA's North West Regional Manager Pakiso Mothupi said his organisation has set aside about R1.6-million to establish the infrastructure.
"The main aim is to provide IT and information systems in all departments in the provinces, after which we will bring communities on board," he said, adding that a number of jobs would be created and if need be, young graduates might be taken on internships.
Ida Masipa, the municipality spokesperson, said the municipality would make available a venue worth R600 000 for the centre, through the assistance of the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.
She said the initiative will strengthen partnerships with communities while allowing the municipality to work with other government institutions in
promoting co-operative governance.
"The training centre will form part of SMME Development and Support Centre currently being established by the Directorate of Infrastructure and Development," said Masipa.
SITA is also expected to develop a user-friendly website at no cost for the municipality, to allow it to render some services online.
