About 2 000 delegates from Africa and Europe are expected to attend the International Transport Convention in Polokwane in May to discuss ways to foster cooperation and integration in the transport sector.
The Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport says it is well on track with arrangements for the conference, taking place at Limpopo International Airport from 15 to 21 May.
Problems and achievements in the field of transport will be shared and analysed during the convention, while international experts will address delegates on the latest technology available to improve rail, road and air transport.
Briefing the media last week, departmental head Ben Mehale said the summit would also provide an excellent forum to discuss the implications of transporting the thousands of international soccer fans who are expected to attend the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.
Mehale said a number of side-attractions were being laid on for the
benefit of delegates and their families, with tourism operators already gearing up for the influx of visitors.
Special events will include a luxury train trip to the Kruger National Park on 18 and 19 May, followed by air shows by the South African Air Force and civil aviation organisations on 20 and 21 May, prior the official closing ceremony.
The convention, which is to be officially opened by President Thabo Mbeki, will also feature a major exhibition by transport stakeholders and private enterprises.
"The necessary upgrading of the airport's conference facilities is well under way, with 185 job opportunities already created in this process," Mehale added.
