Four South Africans still missing

26 January 2005

All South Africans listed as unaccounted for after the tsunami disaster struck South East Asia have been found, Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced on Tuesday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs will now focus on locating the four South Africans still listed as missing.

More than 220 000 people died in the wake of the 26 December tsunami.

Over the last three weeks, SA consular officials in Pretoria and Thailand, working closely with affected families and Interpol, have traced the whereabouts of 2 896 South African citizens, including 11 who lost their lives.

The department is awaiting the outcome of DNA processing initiated by the Thailand authorities to help with the identification of victims.

Consular officials in Thailand and Pretoria will also continue to work closely with Interpol in their efforts to trace the missing four South Africans.

Dlamini-Zuma extended the government's gratitude to all families whose relatives were designated as unaccounted for "for their assistance, co-operation, patience and understanding during the process of tracing their relatives".

Citizens who are currently in the region, or have recently returned from it, are still urged to get in touch with the Department of Foreign Affairs:
