R2.2m upgrade for Mmabatho
October 2004
The department of public works in the North West has set aside R2.2-million to improve the Mmabatho central business district and government buildings, the province's Public Works MEC Howard Yawa said.
Yawa said the project, part of government's Expanded Public Works Programme, entailed paving and upgrading of gardens.
Yawa was speaking during his visit to the site where 80 unemployed youths were receiving training on how to manufacture and lay paving bricks.
He said some of the blocks to be used for paving would be manufactured on site as the department of labour was supervising training to ensure that the products were of quality.
The paving of the parking bays and walkways will focus mainly on the eastern side of the Garona provincial government offices, on the sites of the convention centre and the agri-centre building.
Yawa said the project would improve and enhance the image of the capital, Mmabatho. He praised
the youth for taking the opportunity to participate in the programme.
The Mmabatho project compliments another R22.4-million EPWP project which was launched last month at Modimola village, west of Mafikeng.
The Modimola project created more than 300 jobs by upgrading roads, construction of farming infrastructure and small-scale irrigation.
