History was made at the University of Venda this month when the institution's School for Science and Technology launched the world's first Tshivenda dictionary.
The launch forms part of initiatives by the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) and the Tshivenda National Lexicography Unit to promote multilingualism and the development of marginalised languages in South Africa.
PanSALB chairman Buti Skosana said language was the basis of the history and culture of a nation.
Since this is the first draft of the dictionary, the public is invited to make an input and offer constructive criticism.
Project manager Professor Milubi said the dictionary would play an important role in the development of the Tshivenda language.
"This shows that our language is rich and we should preserve it for the next generations", Milubi said.
The final draft of the dictionary will be published after two years.
