Hunt on for SA Woman of the Year

18 May 2005

Nominations for South Africa's most prestigious award for women in 2005 have now closed - after the original 11 May deadline was extended to accommodate a flood of last-minute submissions.

Since its inception 10 years ago, the Shoprite Checkers / SABC2 Women of the Year award has involved thousands of South Africans in a search to identify and pay tribute to the country's most outstanding women - women who have not only achieved success in their own fields, but who have also made a difference in their communities and inspired others to follow their lead.

This year, an overall winner will once more be selected from the category winners. Each category winner will receive R10 000 in prize money, while the overall winner will receive R30 000.

South Africans were invited to take part in the search by nominating the country's best in seven categories: arts, culture and communications; business entrepreneurs; education; health; science and technology; social welfare; and sport.

Past winners of the competition have served as role models for others to emulate and have, without exception, made major contributions to the country's pressing national issues.

South African Airways remains the official carrier for the award, while Sun International's Table Bay Hotel will host the finalists and judges in Cape Town, where the winners will be announced at a gala ceremony towards the end of July.

The event will be broadcast at 9pm on SABC2 on National Women's Day, Tuesday 9 August, and re-broadcast at 10am on Saturday 13 August.

The award judges will be announced on 14 June.
