South Africa's Parliament will send a 20-member multi-party delegation to observe the elections taking place in Zimbabwe on 31 March. An SA-led Southern African Development Community (SADC) delegation will also be in the country on the invitation of the Zimbabwean government.
Parliament's delegation will be led by the African National Congress's chief whip in the National Assembly, Mbulelo Goniwe.
The delegation will observe the campaign in the run-up to the elections, the casting of votes and subsequent counting, and present a full report to Parliament on its return.
The SADC delegation, led by Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and including various sectors of South African society, will be actively involved in helping to ensure a conducive climate for free and fair elections in Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwean elections will be the fifth to be held over the past 10 months in the SADC, following successful elections in
Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa.
