The government says it would be wrong for anyone to prejudge the conduct or outcome of the elections taking place in Zimbabwe on 31 March.
The Cabinet, after its fortnightly meeting in Pretoria on Thursday, said it noted the steps taken so far to create an environment for free political activity in Zimbabwe, as well as concerns raised about the Zimbabwe voters' roll and the right to hold political gatherings.
The government said it would rely on the various observer missions in Zimbabwe to liase with the role-players and to help ensuring that any challenges around the conduct of the elections were resolved.
"This we shall do in the conviction that it would not be in the interest of the people of Zimbabwe, or that of the people of our region, that anyone in that country acts in a manner that militates against the elections being legitimate, free and fair", said government spokesperson Joel Netshitenzhe.
The Cabinet also reiterated the
government's position that a lasting solution to the challenges in Zimbabwe would be found by the people of Zimbabwe themselves, saying the Southern African Development Community and countries in other regions could only offer assistance.
