Team title for Barloworld

6 June 2006

Cycling's Team Barloworld claimed their eighth win this season in Spain following an impressive five-day race in the hotly contested Euskal Bizikleta, from 31 May to 4 June.

The South African-based team took top honours at the end of stage five for the Best Team Overall with an advantage of six minutes and more over top teams including Wurth, Acqua & Sapone and Team Relax-Gam.

Fourth overall
During the final stage, Pedro Arreitunandia scooped third place on the podium, and fourth in the overall general classification.

Arreitunandia made his move with five kilometres to go on the last climb and remained strong in the five-man lead. As they approached the short descent, he sprinted to the finish to take third place, only seconds behind stage winner David Herrero (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

Team Barloworld dominated the race from the start on Wednesday, 31 May with Alex Efimkin riding into fifth place, while Amets Txurruka and Pedro Arreitunandia finished in 11th and 14th places respectively.

Led the team standings
Star Columbian climber Felix Cardenas raced into second place during stage two, with Efimkin finishing in eighth. By this stage Team Barloworld led the team classification.

The teams were put to the test during the 190-kilometre stage of day three – the longest stage of the race.

Arreitunandia once again proved why he is fast becoming a rider to contend with as he finished in fifth place, with Txurruka and Efimkin closely behind in seventh and eleventh respectively.
