COCA-COLA CUP 2004
Chiefs through to quarterfinals

25 October 2004

Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday kicked off their defence of the Coca-Cola Cup by beating Golden Arrows 2-1 at the Absa stadium in Durban.

Chiefs' goals were scored by Arthur Zwane and Collins Mbesuma, while Lucky Sibeko scored for Arrows in a fast paced, entertaining game.

Chiefs' striker Patrick Mayo missed a scoring opportunity in the 10th minute after collecting a through pass from John 'Shoes' Moshoeu. But Mayo, who only had Arrows goalkeeper Davies Phiri to beat, shot wide.

Chiefs dominated the better part of the first half, constantly raiding the Arrows area. Their persistence paid off in the 14th minute when Zwane raced off on the right flank and powered a low shot that gave Phiri no chance.

Arrows fought back and 10 minutes later miscommunication between Chiefs defender Cyril Nzama and his 'keeper Rowan Fernandez gifted Arrows an equaliser. Fernandez came out of his box to collect a high cross, but left it for Nzama, who headed it into the path of Sibeko who blasted it into the net with Fernandez well out of his goal.

The halftime score was 1-all.

The second half started with Chiefs piling on more pressure on Arrows. This was rewarded when Collins Mbesuma scored the easiest of goals in the 48th minute. Mbesuma controlled a pass from on-form Zwane and headed for the Arrows goal area and hit a seemingly harmless low shot that Phiri parried into his own net.

Arrows put on pressure on Chiefs in an effort to equalise by displaying good football, but their off target shooting and Fernandez vigilance denied them an equaliser.

SuperSport thump Bucks
SuperSport United on Sunday beat PSL rookies Bush Bucks 4-1 at Loftus stadium in Pretoria.

United lead 3-0 at halftime.

Tsweu Mokoro opened the score for United in the 10th minute after sliding home a pass from Dikgang Mabalane. Abram Raselemane increased the score six minutes later and Edward Williams made it 3-0 with a shot from outside the penalty area in the 43rd minute.

Agent Sawu reduced Bucks' deficit in the 51st minute.

Raselemane increased United's tally to 4-1 in the 74th minute when he slotted home a good shot with time to pick his spot.

Birds soar over Celtic
On Saturday at the Seisa Ramabodu stadium in Bloemfontein, Moroka Swallows made Bloemfontein Celtic walk the plank by outclassing them in a five-goal Coca-Cola Cup thriller.

Gavin Hunt's charges hammered the Free State side 3-2 to advance to the next leg of the lucrative cup.

Denis Lota scored twice for the Birds, while the lanky Lungisani Ndlela scored the third goal. Celtic's goals were scored by Moses Spandeel and Siyabonga Nkosi.

Rangers at Wits' end
Meanwhile, Wits University last Wednesday were the first team to proceed to the quarterfinals of the Coca-Cola Cup when they thumped Manning Rangers 3-0 at the Bidvest stadium in Johannesburg.

Wits led 1-0 at interval through a goal by Alois Bunjira in the 20th minute. Charles Yohane scored twice, in the 80th and 83rd minutes.
