CRICKET WORLD CUP 2003
2003 winners will strike it rich

The winners of the 2003 Cricket World Cup will pocket a whopping US$2 000 000 as prize money for cricket’s showpiece increases five-fold over the 1999 tournament.

The executive director of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup organising committee, Ali Bacher, says the increase is due to a larger input from sponsors, as well as a wish to reward the teams in line with sporting trends globally.

The former captain of one of South Africa’s finest ever Test teams says the game is about the players, and it is therefore logical that the teams should be better rewarded in cricket’s most important competition. “The players”, says Bacher, “are the key”.

Bacher also believes that the increased prize money will serve as excellent motivation for the World Cup combatants.

International Cricket Council Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Speed says the ICC is happy with the increased prize money, though he feels the teams would compete for cricket’s biggest prize regardless of the money on offer.

Speed adds that there is money on offer for teams at all stages of the tournament.

The breakdown of the prize money was arrived at with the input of the captains of the 14 teams – two more than in 1999 - competing in the 2003 tournament.

There is, however, a big difference between finishing first and second. The winners take home US$2 000 000 while the runners-up pocket $800 000. Bacher has no problem explaining the difference. “Winning is everything”, he says.

Prize money breakdown:

  • Winner: $2 000 000
  • Runner-up: $800 000
  • Losing semi-finalists: $400 000
  • 5th place: $150 000
  • 6th place: $80 000

Super sixes

  • Win: $40 000
  • Lose: $20 000

Group matches

  • Win: $10 000
  • Lose: $5 000
