Origins Tour honours Gary Player
20 April 2006
The Sunshine Tour Winter Swing has resumed this week with the Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour series at Arabella. The series pays tribute to South Africa’s greatest golfers Gary Player, one of the legends of the game who paved the way for the successful development of professional golf around the world.
The six pro-am tournaments are hosted at some of the most spectacular courses in South Africa, and are geared towards providing a unique amateur experience through which Vodacom can celebrate the longstanding relationships it has with its VIP customers, clients and business partners.
It allows a select group of amateurs the opportunity to play alongside South Africa's top up-and-coming professionals on the best courses in South Africa.
Golf legends honoured
The first series, hosted in 2004, has honoured past South Africa golf legends, such as Bobby Locke, Harold Henning and Papwa Sewgolum, who laid the
foundations for all South Africa's golfers.
In the 2005 series, it was the "Iceman" Ben Hogan who was honoured for the incredible influence he had on the game.
The 2006 Vodacom Origins of Golf Series will once again provide the platform for South Africa's exciting young professional golfers to launch their careers. And they will do so under the banner of Gary Player this year, whose illustrious career will be celebrated at six pro-am tournaments around South Africa.
Determination and passion
As a winner of nine Major Championships, nine Champions Tour Majors, and 163 titles worldwide, Player epitomises the determination and passion to succeed, which is so critical in golf.
This year, as part of the Gary Player tribute, the invited amateurs will be provided with Black Knight clothing on day one of each tournament, and will be treated to the best of Vodacom golf.
The final day of the tournament is reserved for the
professionals who will battle it out for the title played over 54 holes of stroke play.
"I am extremely honoured to be recognized in this way," said Gary Player. "Vodacom is a wonderful supporter of professional golf in South Africa and I'm sure both the amateurs and the professionals will enjoy a tremendous series."
