SuperSport take Supa8 2004
4 October 2004
SuperSport United were crowned SAA Supa8 champions on Saturday after defeating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the Absa stadium in Durban in the final of South African football's lucrative knockout competition.
SuperSport's goal was scored by Phil Evans from the penalty spot in the 47th minute after Arthur Zwane handled the ball in Chiefs' area.
Chiefs dominated the game and launched constant attacks at the United goal, but off-target shooting and United keeper Wendell Robinson denied the Glamour Boys goals.
United, on the other hand, hardly bothered Chiefs goalkeeper Rowan Fernandez as Amakhosi's midfield snuffed out all their opponents' moves.
Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma came close in the 10th minute when he eluded two United defenders, but his shot went over the bar. John "Shoes" Moshoeu could have put Chiefs in front in the 17th minute when he ran onto a pass from Thabo Mooki, only to blast the side netting.
In the 29th minute,
Mbesuma dispossessed a United defender and, with Robinson out of position, was denied by the upright. Although he reacted to the rebound, his shot went wide.
It was two minutes into the second half when SuperSport launched one of their few attacks at the Chiefs goal. Evans made a good run on the right flank and delivered a cross into the Chiefs area. Zwane handled the ball and referee Jerome Damon pointed to the spot.
Evans stepped up and blasted a low shot into the net, with Fernandez diving the wrong way.
Chiefs fought hard for an equaliser, but continued to fail to find the net.
SuperSport became R1.3-million richer for their efforts, while Chiefs went home with R750 000.
