SAA SUPA 8
Cosmos: Supa 8 2003 champs

22 September 2003

Jomo Cosmos on Sunday lifted the inaugural SAA Supa 8 Cup when they emerged 3-2 victors over Moroka Swallows through a golden goal penalty by Lovers Mohlala in the 112th minute of the final played at Kings Park stadium in Durban.

The score was 1-1 at the interval.

In a mostly entertaining game, Swallows scored first when George Hummel headed in a cross from Lucas Sebona in the first minute.

Dennis Lota could have extended the Birds' lead in the 14th minute, but shot wide after being set up with a perfect pass by Kerryn Jordan.

Cosmos equalised in the 26th minute through Andrew Rabutla who fired a powerful shot past Greg Etafia after Swallows defenders failed to clear their lines from a corner kick.

Cosmos went 2-1 up in the dying minutes of the game when Russel Mwafulirwa converted Dikgang Mabalane's cross. But this was soon cancelled out by Gary McNab who headed in a corner kick from Sebona, to make it 2-all, forcing the game into extra time.

After 22 minutes of extra time Cosmos striker Manuel Bucuane was fouled in the penalty box by defender Hummel, and Mohlala duly converted the spot kick, making Cosmos the winners on the golden goal rule.

Cosmos, who are also the holders of the Coca-Cola Cup, are now R1.2-million richer from winning the tournament, while the Birds took home R700 000.
