All-action WWE headed for SA

18 July 2007

Following a successful tour of South Africa in 2003, World Wrestling Entertainment will tour the country in September as part of its International Summer Slam Tour, with reigning WWE heavyweight champion John Cena heading the line-up.

The tour kicks off at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town on Wednesday 5 September. The action moves to Westridge Park Stadium in Durban on 6 September, followed by the final night of drama and macho posturing at The Dome in Johannesburg on 7 September.

Four years ago, the WWE sold out at four SA venues, and massive interest is expected once more.

Massive crowd puller
During 2006, the organisation toured 17 countries, drawing more than two million fans. According to a press release from the WWE, to date they have "outsold the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Robbie Williams".

John Cena, one of the most popular WWE stars and a household name among wrestling fans, earned his "cred" when he started out as a rapper, with free-styling lyrics fitting his vain, disrespectful persona.

Although the full list of WWE superstars to tour the country has not been released, a number of other big names have been confirmed.

Former ECW champion Bobby Lashley is on his way to SA, as is the former Intercontinental champion, the 160 kilogram "Samoan Bulldozer" Umaga. "The Legend Killer", Randy Orton, will also be heading south, along with high-flying Jeff Hardy.

It is hoped that one of the WWE's long-time superstars, veteran villain Triple H, who has been recuperating since early January from a torn right quadriceps, will also be able to make the South African tour.

WWE diva Candice Michelle, who defeated Melina at "Vengeance" to become the WWE women's champion, will make sure there's also some beauty among all beef.

Tickets for the Summer Slam Tour can be bought through Computicket.
