Orlin wins Olivier award
17 February 2003
Provocative SA dancer and choreographer Robyn Orlin has won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for her production, “Daddy I’ve Seen This Piece Six Times and I Still Don’t Know Why They’re Hurting Each Other”.
Speaking to the Sunday Times newspaper from London, Orlin said winning the British theatre award was “a little bit overwhelming”. She said it was “amazing” that a small project for the FNB Vita Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg four years ago had become such an international success.
Orlin, 47, won in the category “Outstanding Achievement in Dance” for the “creative originality” of her piece.
“Daddy”, which satirises various dance forms and explores the pursuit of a South African identity, has been performed in many countries and has won a few other international awards.
Starring Neli Xaba, Gerard Bester, Toni Morkel, Nico Moremi, Pule Molebatsi and Lindiwe Ndlovu, “Daddy” was staged at The Pit at London’s Barbican Centre
last year.
