Seeking South African skills in London

1 September 2008

Homecoming Revolution, the non-profit organisation sponsored by First National Bank, is headed for London once more - accompanied by some of South Africa's top companies - on the hunt for South African talent living abroad.

Homecoming Revolution's London Event 2008 will give South Africans living in the UK the opportunity to meet directly with high-profile employers who are searching for expatriate skills.

It will also give them a chance to find about purchasing property back in South Africa, starting up businesses, setting up bank accounts, and sorting out their children's education.

The event, now in its third year, takes place at Kensington Olympia on the weekend of 4 and 5 October.

Companies that will be exhibiting for skills at the event include First National Bank, RMB, Sasol, Allan Gray, Group 5, Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs, and Netcare. For the first time there will also be a section for education in South Africa, with a number of of SA's top schools exhibiting.

Seeff Properties will be showcasing their South African properties, and other support businesses exhibiting will include 1st Contact, First National Bank and Intergate Immigration.

Roelf Meyer, project director of Action for A Safe South Africa, Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille, will be keynote speakers at the event.

"The skills issue is not abating," says Homecoming Revolution MD Martine Schaffer. "The Homecoming Revolution understands that part of the solution is in engaging directly with South African skills and encouraging them to return."

The London Event, says Schaffer, "is an opportunity for us to showcase South Africa to our own people, many of whom still have strong emotional ties to South Africa."

Alan Ross, recruited to Microsoft through the event in 2007, says: "Only when you live outside South Africa do you realize what you leave behind. Working abroad gives you a different perspective.

"I see so many positives in where South Africa is today and the achievements that have been made from when I left it behind eight years ago. I want to face the issues here and be part of the solution."
