Second five-star hotel for Eastern Cape
5 December 2012 South Africa's Eastern Cape province will get its second five-star hotel when Sun International opens The Boardwalk Hotel and Spa in Port Elizabeth in December. "Port Elizabeth is ideally located on the famous Garden Route and represents a great starting point to explore and discover the wonders of the area," Lorenzo Giani, Sun International's representative in North America, said in a statement last week announcing the hotel's scheduled opening. "Facing the Indian Ocean, this majestic Victorian building is set to become one of Port Elizabeth's most iconic hotels," Giani said. The hotel is part of Sun International's R1-billion investment to upgrade and expand the Eastern Cape's biggest entertainment complex, The Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment World. The Boardwalk Hotel and Spa's 140 rooms include eight luxury suites and a presidential suite. The hotel will have one restaurant and two bars, where Sun International's famous buffets will be available for breakfast and dinner. "The cuisine will be Asian inspired, offering a blend of spices and other aromatic flavors to accompany fine local seafood," the company said. "Visitors to The Boardwalk Hotel and Spa will be able to enjoy everything the Indian Ocean has to offer: sun-drenched beaches, warm clear waters, stunning sunsets and water activities such as swimming, fishing, surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and sailing." The Radisson Blu Port Elizabeth, managed by the Rezidor Hotel Group, is currently the only five-star hotel in the province. Business Day reported Rezidor on Monday as saying that the hotel was profitable and that it wanted to keep it going despite the recent liquidation of its owner, Auspex Hotels and Leisure. Rezidor, one of the fastest-growing hotel companies worldwide, has two Radisson Blu hotels in Cape Town. According to Business Day, the group announced in September that it would open a Park Inn by Radisson in Newlands, Cape Town in the first quarter of 2014. Sun International, meanwhile, will also be opening its new business hotel, The Maslow Hotel, in Sandton, Johannesburg in January following a US$28-million (about R250-million) refurbishment of the hotel formally known as The Grayston.
