TripAdvisor users vote Cape Town tops

Cape Town has come out tops on TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice 2011 Destinations Awards, being voted the world's best tourism destination ahead of Barcelona, London, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome and Sydney.

The TripAdvisor website features reviews and advice on hotels, resorts, flights, vacation rentals, vacation packages, travel guides, and more.

Travellers' Choice Destinations awards honour top travel spots worldwide based on millions of real and unbiased opinions from TripAdvisor travellers. Award winners were determined based on a combination of travellers' favourite places and overall destination popularity.

'Tourist brochure-views'

"Cape Town glistens at the southern toe of the African continent," TripAdvisor said in a statement this week. "Tourist brochure-views at Blaauwberg Beach and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens are within easy driving distance of 'the Mother City'.

"The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve provides sweeping sea vistas, hiking trails and wildlife encounters.

"On a more sombre note, travellers can visit Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years."

Inspiration for travellers

Now in its third year of the awards, TripAdvisor has honoured 337 outstanding destinations across the globe.

In addition to the top 25 in the world overall, top 25 lists have been named for the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico, Central and South America, Asia, India, South Pacific, Canada, Africa, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

"Millions of TripAdvisor travellers around the globe have helped identify the world's top travel spots," said TripAdvisor chief marketing officer Barbara Messing. "The Travellers' Choice Destinations awards not only recognise some of the most beloved travel destinations worldwide, but serve as inspiration for millions of travellers looking to plan their next trip."
