Tshivenda research centre opens

21 February 2006 The University of Venda in Limpopo province has opened a Tshivenda Language Research and Development Centre to promote reading and writing of the language. The centre will also reach out to communities through literacy training and basic language courses, as well as the documenting of folktales, legends and idioms. The facility, a project of the national and provincial departments of arts and culture in partnership with the university, was opened by Limpopo Sports, Arts and Culture MEC Joe Maswanganyi on Monday. Centre manager Professor Mbulaheni Musehane said the centre would play an important role in education and would ensure access to vital services and information for personal development and artistic expression. He said the Tshivenda centre would cooperate on vital language projects with language centres in other institutions around the country to advance multilingualism in South Africa. "The objective is to put particular focus on previously neglected languages, assigning them a central role in the implementation of the country's multilingual policy," Musehane said. Source: BuaNews
