The Fifa local organising committee (LOC) has announced that two million tickets for the 2010 Fifa World Cup will go on sale in January next year.

Eager soccer fans are expected to snap up the tickets which will range in price for the 64 matches.

The new LOC legal affairs head Leslie Sedide said two million tickets would be made available to the general public for the World Cup in mid-Januray 2009.

A further 120 000 more tickets have been set aside to be given away to so-called nation builders - including people who had built stadiums and roads in preparation for the biggest soccer spectacular to be held on African soil.

The tickets will go on sale on Fifa's website as well as paper ticket applications which will be available at various outlets in South Africa, and on request internationally, Sedide explained.

The draw for next year's Confederations Cup groups will be made on November 22 and the tickets will be put on sale five days later.

The event, which is seen as a test of the World Cup's preparations, will be staged in four stadia across South Africa from June 14 to 28 next year.

The Fifa Confederations Cup boasts an inspiring lineup, including the selectors of Brazil as Copa America and reigning Fifa Confederations Cup winners, 2006 Fifa World Cup winners Italy, hosts South Africa, European champions Spain, African champions the Pharaohs of Egypt, first-time Asian champions Iraq and Concacaf Gold Cup winners the USA.

LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan said all South Africans had contributed towards bringing the Fifa World Cup to South Africa.

"So it is only befitting that we make tickets available to the ordinary fans at affordable prices."

With this in mind, he appealed to citizens to participate in competitions that are run by official sponsors, to stand in line to win tickets.

"The reason for this is that we want to give every South African a chance to be part of the spectacular event."
