TV series showcases housing

13 January 2009

The Department of Housing has commissioned the third season of BNG TV, a programme on South Africa's progress with the Breaking New Ground housing initiative.

The department says the show, which has attracted more than two million weekly viewers, provides a platform for informed dialogue among all South Africans, while examining the implementation of the government's housing policy since 2004.

"On the BNG TV series, you can see delivery in action, and most importantly, you can see how this has made a difference in people's lives," media services head Ndivhuwo Mabaya said in a statement last week.

Vigorous depates

Presented by local talk show host Eric Miyeni, the show has seen some vigorous debates that look at the achievements of the department and its partners as they come together to implement the housing programme.

According to the department, the show highlights some of the challenges the new housing policy seeks to address. It also includes round table discussions where government officials engage with experts in different fields relating to housing and urban planning.

"The show will again focus on individuals who have used their housing opportunity to improve the quality of their lives," said Mabaya.

'Decent accommodation'

According to a BuaNews article last week, the department had built 2.7-million houses, creating decent accommodation for more than 13-million people, over 14 years. It is hoped that by March 2009 the number will reach 2.8-million.

Major housing projects

Highlights of the show will include visits to all housing projects implemented since 2004, the department says.

These include Duncan Village and Zanemvula in the Eastern Cape province; Grasslands in the Free State; Cosmo City, Brickfields and Chief Albert Luthuli in Gauteng province; Emnambithi and Mount Moriah in KwaZulu-Natal; Diteneng and Legae La Batho in Limpopo; Klarinet and Emsangweni / Nkanini in Mpumalanga; Khutsong in North West province; Lerato Park in the Northern Cape; and Ouboks in the Western Cape.

The BNG TV programme runs every weekday at 10pm on SABC2 and at 6:25pm on etv.

Episodes from season one of the BNG TV programme are available for download at the Department of Housing website.
