A liquid natural gas plant in Eastern Cape is the next phase of a government project to provide
not only employment opportunities for the area, but also more sustainable energy options for
South Africa. Natural gas is considered the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel.
South Africa is committed to adding nuclear to its energy mix, saying the procurement process
for the nuclear new build programme will start in the second quarter and be completed by the
end of the 2015 financial year. The first station will come on line in 2023.
Investment in infrastructure must be a priority for Africa if it is to achieve double-digit economic
growth, Prof Jeffrey Sachs tells delegates at the Third Financing for Development Conference.
They have gathered to set the new financing architecture for a new global partnership.
Just Energy and InnoWind – with small-holder land owners and farmers – are building a wind
farm using a unique business model that re-invests a substantial portion of the revenues earned
from developing the project back into equity for the local community to own.
