Backpacker lodges: Gauteng province
The Province
With a total area of 16 500 square kilometres, Gauteng is slightly smaller than the US state of New Jersey. While it's South Africa's smallest province, it has the second-largest population after KwaZulu-Natal, and by far the highest population density - over 570 people per square kilometre. It is in an area known as The Highveld because of the high altitude. It's also the economic hub of South Africa. Johannesburg, especially, is a fast-paced city and offers plenty to do, as does Pretoria, a short drive up the M1 highway.- Find out more: Gauteng province
