SA 'ahead of schedule' for 2010
Themba Gadebe

10 October 2005

Danny Jordaan, CEO of South Africa's local organising committee, says the country's preparations for the 2010 World Cup are ahead of schedule.

Jordaan was speaking at the Annual National Tourism Conference hosted by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism at Sun City over the weekend.

Jordaan added, however, that South Africa would need to find ways of dealing with the influx of fans expected for the tournament.

"How are you going to communicate with a person from China staying in Nelspruit?" he asked.

Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said his department was discussing the possibility of setting up language schools with various embassies.

The conference adopted a plan of action on accommodation and hospitality, safety and security, transport and marketing.

"We will work with Fifa to ensure adequate, suitable and sustainable accommodation for 2010," delegates said in a joint statement.

They also committed themselves to ensuring that small businesses focused on tourism would benefit when the country hosts the international event, and to working with the law enforcement agencies to ensure the highest standards of safety.
