The preliminary draw for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the first official event in the build-up to 2010, will see some of South Africa's top musicians performing to a global television audience of millions in 170 countries.
The line-up for the draw, taking place in Durban on 25 November, includes the voice and spirit of the world-famous Lion King musical, Lebo M, the celebrated Soweto String Quartet, and Judith Sephuma, whose debut album "A cry, A smile, A Dance" garnered several awards when it was released in 2001.
Also performing will be Freshlyground, who gave the world a foretaste of the 2010 South African vibe at the 2006 Fifa World Cup closing ceremony in Germany, before scooping the 2006 MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act.
Speaking to journalists at the SA Football Association's Johannesburg headquarters on Wednesday, 2010 Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan said South Africa's preliminary draw would "capture
the attention of the world."
"As South Africans, we need to hold together and be one single team. If we can do that, I know Fifa's first event on African soil will be a tremendous success," Jordaan said.
A stage made up of over six kilometres of pine wood, feature revolving platforms and an arena for the orchestra, has been specially constructed to showcase the performers on the night of the draw.
Earlier this year, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sbu Ndebele said the province would sell the "Zulu brand" to international visitors coming to the preliminary draw - starting with courteous and royal treatment of guests arriving at Durban International Airport.
"When they arrive we must make sure they do not want to go back," Ndebele said. "The totality of their experience must be such that they will want to come back to our province in the time leading up to 2010 and beyond."
KwaZulu-Natal will host 2010 matches and 2009 Confederations Cup matches at the R2.2-billion
Moses Mabhida stadium.
