Licence renewals made easier

The Eastern Cape is expanding its reach by offering motorists the option of renewing their motor vehicle licences at South African Post Office branches in the province.
Thirty sites around the province have been identified, 25 of which are within the Buffalo City municipality (Greater East London) and five within the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality (Greater Mthatha).
To date, the service is offered in 12 Post Office branches around the province: East London, Beacon Bay, Southernwood, Gonubie, Vincent, King Williams Town, Mdantsane, Amathole, Viedgesville, Unitra, Mqanduli and in Madeira.
Speaking at the launch of the service in East London this week, provincial Roads and Transport Minister Thobile Mhlahlo said the new service would also help eradicate the backlog at the province's licence centres.
"The new motor vehicle registration renewal service that we are launching with the South African Post Office has already yielded good
results in Nelson Mandela Bay (Greater Port Elizabeth)," Mhlahlo said.
"When we entered into this partnership in July 2006, there was a backlog of 1 700 transactions, which were not finalised by the department," he said, adding that 95% of that backlog had now been cleared.
Mhlahlo said his department was able to cut down on long queues in Nelson Mandela Bay, thanks to 31 outlets around the city that also provide services during weekends and public holidays.
"We will be launching more similar services in other regions of the province," department spokesperson Ncedo Kumbaca told BuaNews. "We want to make sure that there are no more backlogs at our licence centres."
